Florida Keys Sailing Trip
Sail the Florida Keys on a Sailing Catamaran
There’s nothing quite like casting off for a three-day sailing trip through the Florida Keys, where every sunrise feels like the start of a new adventure and every anchorage tells its own story. The journey begins with the gentle hum of the engines as we point the bow south, leaving the busy canals of Fort Lauderdale and Miami behind and trading them for open water, fresh breeze, and the promise of island time. Our first stop is No Name Harbor inside the Bill Baggs State Park on Key Biscayne, a spot legendary among boaters not only for its calm, protected anchorage but also for its front-row sunset views and easy dinghy ride ashore to Boater’s Grill. There, we dig into fresh fish, authentic Cuban dishes, and cold drinks with fellow sailors who, like us, know this hidden pocket is a jewel worth sharing. The next morning, sails go up as we glide toward Elliott Key, the first of the true Florida Keys and a pristine slice of Biscayne National Park where the water shifts into electric blues and greens. Dropping anchor off Elliott gives us the chance to swim, snorkel, or simply float on the mats while watching dolphins cruise by and pelicans dive for breakfast. That evening, dinner is onboard—grilled seafood, charcuterie on the cockpit table, and stories traded under a dome of stars far away from the city lights. On day three we swing north again, stopping at Nixon Sandbar, the lively weekend playground of Miami boaters, where the vibe changes from quiet island solitude to music, laughter, and floating parties. Here the sand is just beneath the surface, the water waist-deep and crystal-clear, perfect for meeting new friends, tossing a football, or just kicking back with a drink in hand while music drifts across the anchorage. As the trip winds down, we chart a leisurely course back, savoring the sight of Miami’s skyline re-emerging from the horizon. Three days pass in a blur of sails, sunshine, laughter, and saltwater swims, but the memories linger: a perfect balance of serene anchorages and high-energy stops, great meals on board and ashore, and the simple magic of living life at the pace of the tides.
